press release

They were the avant-gardes of the times. They were women and they were innovative painters. GL STRAND is proud to present the most distinct, women painters of the era as part of the Nordic exhibition ‘Modern Women’.

With more than 100 paintings of twenty women painters from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, the public can look forward to experiencing the works of Ragnhild Keyser, Franciska Clausen, Sigrid Hjertén, Kristín Jónsdóttir and Helene Schjerfbeck, among others.

Women artists are an overlooked part of Nordic art history and are seldom mentioned to the same extent as their male colleagues. ‘Modern Women’ focuses on this dilemma and shows an array of the central names as well as other distinctive women whose talents have been overshadowed by that of male artists.

The exhibition illuminates a period of rapid change when artists increasingly began to travel and became inspired by French and German contemporary art. The diversity of Modernism is clearly illustrated by the artists in the exhibition, who with their individuality contributed to an exploration of painting of that time. In this way, the exhibition is a meeting of several styles within modernism: fauvism, expressionism, cubism and constructivism.

In 2002, GL STRAND exhibited ‘When Women Speak’ featuring works from 1880 to 1900 and where social and cultural conditions were central themes. Since then, the question of women in art has become even more pressing.

The exhibition runs from October 28, 2006 through to January 28, 2007. It then travels to Gothenburg Art Museum (February 21 – May 27, 2007) and Trondheim Art Museum (July 1 – October 7, 2007).
