Mona Filz: Pillow Garden

Mona Filz went 1991 the first time to Kaliningradskaja Oblast to finish her photographic studies. Planned as a short trip into German history first there were questions left by encounters and perceptions she had in this former forbidden area, which left her in a case of doubt. Or maybe it was kind of a virus she had caught there which activated unknown parts of her personality and let her see things from a different point of view.

She expanded her continuous search also in Lithuania and reconstructed the historical-political background which belonged to a missing family photography taken in Klaipeda. On this picture close persons appear in an unknown context with foreign others and the integrative view of the photographer emanates a sensuous appeareance, that opened the door for new interpretations of the fragmentary oral histories of her mother.

The absence of a theory and the unability of the worker's class to self-reflection, which would have integrated this experiences, led finally to questions of identity and diversity. On this point starts the work of Mona Filz and operates in self-portraits as a different person with re-construction and re-integration of missing cultural references and the view of others, built out of images of the family album and by memories as a child, by habits and attitudes seen in Lithuania.

Her work can be seen as a imaginary space for encounters, where the reflection of an echo of former times experiences a physical manifestation, where vividly tales are combined with bluryness as free space for the viewer.

In this exhibitions photographies, drawings and collages are shown, fragments and sketches, thoughts and ideas variating on the garden as the mystical place of discovery.
