press release

A site specific installation commissioned by The Drawing Room to coincide with a Hayward Touring exhibition of contemporary drawing, a collaboration between mima, Middlesbrough and Bluecoat, Liverpool in partnership with The Drawing Room, London. Monika Grzymala’s installations function somewhere between an architectural intervention and immense line drawings. Each work is made site-specifically in response to the particular exhibition situation. Grzymala describes each piece in terms of kilometres of used line which references the personal investment of time and energy. Using a complex interweave of adhesive tape and other materials, the kilometres of used materials express the mental and physical distance the artist has travelled when contemplating and discovering the image. During this process she experiences drawing as hand-led thought.

Grzymala’s commission for The Drawing Room will be linked to site-specific installations created at mima, Middlesbrough, 27 February – 10 May) and Bluecoat, Liverpool (22 May - 29 July).
