moving

moving is research. moving is un-finished. moving is the wonderful time spent looking forward to something you will probably not find. moving is a trial. moving is experimentation with what you avoided before.

moving is the freedom of art and artists. moving is the day and the night in your studio, without being forced to produce anything.

moving is the discussion about your painting, your story, your music or your video. moving is the palette you used in the past and you will use in the future. moving is the composition you are looking for. moving is the book you are reading. moving is a portrait of Mars. moving is the sound of a fountain in the park. moving is a phrase you listened to in the supermarket. moving is the problem you want to solve. moving is a labyrinth. moving is wandering around Berlin, asking people about happiness. moving is your favorite place to be. moving is a giant puppet made out of cans. moving is Berlin and its’ many faces.

moving shows a selection of works realized during the autumn residency at takt kunstprojektraum. Nine international visual artists, writers, performers and musicians spent three months in Berlin and dedicated themselves to their art, without any restrictions or pressure on ideas or outcome.

The works on display move directly from studios to the exhibition space. They are often works in progress or are the temporary steps of a broader research. They exude the overwhelming creativity and the precariousness which characterizes the activity of the artist in the atelier and the design and the development of an artwork. moving is probably a contradiction itself since it pretends to channel the freedom of art into a fixed time and place and into printed words. At the same time, it is a reflection on, and maybe a challenge to the role of exhibitions by defying the status of “finished” artwork and thereby influencing the practice of artists. An exhibition and its deadline could be, indeed, an encouragement to work with enthusiasm on a project and finalize it but, at the same time, could constitute for artists a counter-productive strain, pointless hurry which damages their research and its value. Although the show brings together works from different artists and in different media, it recalls the atmosphere of an ideal art laboratory, not just in terms of space but also conceptually. The atelier is, indeed, the mental and physical place where the artist - being a visual artist, a musician, a performer or a writer - moves back and forth from idea to idea, from piece to piece, constantly rethinking the same motif or working on different pieces at the same time. Nothing - from the smallest detail to the roughest sketch - is insignificant or accidental. On the contrary, everything is connected and meaningful in regard to a wider project. Similarly, the works on display in the Tapir gallery are in close dialogue with each other, allowing the visitor to roam - back and forth - among them and to trace his/her own path of aesthetics and meanings.
