press release

Edinburgh College of Art invite you to the opening on Sunday 15 June 1997, 4-7 pm by Hanno von Graevenitz, Consul General of the German General Consulate, Edinburgh of

Nicola Schrudde – Where Ochre turns to Violet Sunday 15 June – Friday 11 July 1997 Caledonian Hall, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh

Nicola Schrudde’s large scale sculptures made of clay are swathed in soft pastel colours. A number of commentators have remarked that her work is more closely allied to painting than sculpture and Schrudde herself cites the French Impressionists as major influence. It is their interest in light to which she is also drawn.

For Schrudde the surface is an important element. The unfired clay is manipulated by hand and is marked by thousands of finger prints. There is a tension between the surface, dusted with muted colour such as pink or violet, and the volume of each piece as well as ambiguous relationship between the object in the architectural space. Each work appears to shimmer rather like a distant horizon on a sunlit day.

In 1995 Schrudde was awarded the Edinburgh College of Art Fellowship by the Henry Moore Foundation to work in the Sculpture Department. This exhibition is a culmination of Schrudde’s work in Edinburgh over the past two years. It comprises approximately 27 floor pieces, dispersed around the space, as well as a number of wall hangings. Each of these obtain traces, or incidental marks, made from clay.

Schrudde was born in Bensberg, Germany in 1962. She studied at Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf under Tony Cragg, Bernd Minnich, Norbert Kricke and Klaus Rinke. Schrudde has had a number of one person shows in Germany, this will be her first major solo exhibition in the UK.

This is a collaboration of Oriel Mosty, Llandudno, Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham and the Edinburgh College of Art. Where Ochre turns to Violet will be shown at Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham from 19 July - 23 August 1997 and at Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno from 1 November – 13 December 1997.
