India is a country with an ancient and extremely complex culture. The diversity of cultures and religions is manifested in a topography of architecture and sculptures that can hardly be surveyed. Nicolaus Schmidt depicts this diversity in highly focused photographs. The photographic convolute INDIA TECTON reveals references and kinships between artifacts from various religions and epochs. Likewise, colonial rule, international cultural relations, but also social contrasts are reflected in the photographs. What emerges are standalone artworks that simultaneously highlight the architectural characteristics of buildings and artifacts from antiquity to the modern era. With his project INDIA TECTON the photographer has created an anthology of Indian architectural elements.

A book on the exhibition has been published by Deutscher Kunstverlag: Nicolaus Schmidt, INDIA TECTON, 256 pages with 191 illustrations. https://www.deutscherkunstverlag.de/buch/neuerscheinungen/india-tecton.html
