press release
Since its 2013 founding in a Cairo apartment by artists
Taha Belal (b. 1984, Cairo, Egypt) and Jenifer Evans
(b. 1982, Bristol, UK),
Nile Sunset Annex has become one of the region’s
most dynamic platforms for contemporary art.
Over the past two years, NSA has organized an ongoing
series of experimental exhibitions with local, regional, and
international artists. This program is the generator for the
NSA art collection, which includes one key work from each
exhibition presented. Belal and Evans call this the only
circulating collection of contemporary art in Egypt.
Inspired in part by Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise,
the Nile Sunset Annex collection is complimented by a
corresponding set of 1:5-scale miniature artworks, which
fit into a suitcase for easy travel.
With each exhibition, NSA produces a “publication,”
created in collaboration with the artists they show.
Rather than conventional catalogues or brochures, these
have taken many forms, including an LP record, a set
of downloadable image and text files, and a 3D-printed
sculpture, among other things.
For this exhibition, Nile Sunset Annex presents a shelf for
each of the exhibitions they have held to date, each one
displaying a miniature artwork, a postcard bearing the
image of the corresponding full-sized piece as installed at
NSA, and a copy of the related publication.
