Opkomst en Verval is the Dutch debut by Norbert Bisky(1970), one of the most rising German artists of the moment. As the title already explains, this exhibition is about the (historical) collective consciousness of the rise and fall of great societies and cultures. The paintings, exclusively made for the gallery, deal with themes like Heaven and hell, Paradise and the Apocalypse. Inspired by a heritage of German Romanticism, Italian Renaissance painting and 20th century imagery of war and terror, Bisky shows a world where it is only about the masses and the energy in-between, not about the individual; surface instead of psychology.

With his paintings, Bisky -born and raised in the former DDR- shows the (past) glory of Socialism in all its excessiveness, where it seems that there is no place for any common emotion. The gallery will be transformed into heavenly coloured sceneries full of beautiful landscapes and into a burning hell, full of explosive colours and downfallen, burning boys. Both the Heaven and Hell paintings give a feeling of anxiety and a superb energy of attraction. ‘Whether there is the rise or the fall’, according to Bisky himself, ‘every painting has its beauty’.

Norbert Bisky was born in Leipzig and followed the Academy of Art in Berlin, where he studied under the guidance of the illustrious Georg Baselitz. Almost immediately after his graduation, he was picked up by the prestigious Berlin gallerist Michael Schultz. From that moment on, a new star was born and is continuing with solo exhibitions from Berlin to New York. Bisky lives and works in Berlin.
