NWUK 1998

New Work UK (NWUK) was Chisenhale Gallery’s ground-breaking open submission project. NWUK profiled ambitious contemporary art being made by emerging artists in the UK. Comprised of three one-week exhibitions, NWUK provided a public platform for incisive, previously unseen work. For 2000, selections from an overwhleming response were made by the artists Amikam Toren and Jessica Voorsanger together with Chisenhale Gallery.

Stuart Croft, Rowena Dring, Michelle Griffiths, Yasu Ichige, Ben Judd, Janice Kerbel, Waseem Khan, Klega, Jon Lockhart, Brighid Lowe, Caroline McCarthy, Kate Smith and David Thorpe.

Launching NWUK, Post-Neo-Amateurism argued that the trash art practices of recent years had become an orthodoxy: amateurism was in danger of becoming a professional qualification. With this project, curatorial group Unit proposed a move onto a more complex condition.

- NWUK 2: 15.07.98 - 19.07.98 DIRTY DESERT Soren Dahlgaard and Mikkel Tjellesen

Danish artists Soren Dahlgaard and Mikkel Tjellesen exhibited a series of four cinematic ‘stills’ - photographs depicting scenes from a non-existent 70s detective film. The drama was complicated by the fact that the ‘bad guy’ was a huge green jelly.

- NWUK 3: 22.07.98 - 26.07.98 STEALING LIGHT Nick Stewart

Nick Steward’s stunning two part video installation brought NWUK 2000 to a close. In one, a chandelier was carried through city streets, while on the opposite wall a man stood very still in a darkened room with a lit chandelier obscuring his head. The video footage was derived from a performance in two parts, carried out for camera.
