press release

The Mudima Foundation, after the recently participation to Malkunst 2 - Aktuelle Malerei aus Deutschland - presents the first solo exhibition in Milan of Oda Jaune, one of the most interesting artists of the new generation in Germany, born in Sofia in Bulgaria in 1979, she has studied with Prof. Jörg Immendorff at the Academy of Düsseldorf, where she lives and works. For this occasion, the young Bulgarian artist has painted a new series of works on canvas and on paper, more a large vertical diptych measuring 4,80 x 4,40 meters. In addition will be shown also a selection of paintings from the last years. Oda Jaune composes her painitngs in an old-masterly manner which lends them at first glance the balanced appearance of stage-like scenarios, as they were brought to a climax in the painting of Mannerism and the Baroque era. The artist does not derive her motifs from history, but rather from her immediate environment, which is determined by vacation snapshots, train journeys, magazines, and by the Internet. Her works emerge from moments in life, from her own experiences or media images, whose personal or political messages are carried into the compositions, here taking on a totally different meaning. Her painting are confusing and uncanny. They suggest familiarity by taking up commonly known pictorial schemes from art history, which in the next moment become distorted to grotesques of the 21st century. The recurrent theme in her works is the mask, to exalt the theatrically of painting and to play with ambiguity. We don't know whether what we see are persons or animals, men or women. But whenever they are, we find ourselves beyond reality. In the technical perfection of her clearly reduced formal elements Oda Jaune's works appear both seductive and disturbing. As she admits, aspire to ensnare the observer.
