press release

A major part of the collection is art from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. It was a period in which artists rebelled against the established norms and values and imbued the concept of art with new meaning. Both the materials and techniques used as well as the objectives and premises of art changed. A number of works from this period could be seen in the museum’s opening exhibition OVER WIJ/ABOUT WE. As a sequel to this, a new selection from this part of the collection is on display from 13 March 2004. In nine rooms, nine works, mainly installations, by ten different artists can be seen. The exhibiting artists are Richard Long, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Robert Morris, Dan Graham, Giulio Paolini, Ger van Elk, Bernd & Hilla Becher and Richard Serra. A guest exhibitor is the artist Angela Bulloch (CDN, 1966), whose installation Video Sound systems, 1997 is displayed in the tenth room. Part of this includes videos from Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari and Paul McCarthy.

Based on concepts like space, arrangement, experience, interpretation and context, several similarities and differences can be seen between the exhibited works. T-Junction by Richard Serra, Driven Man, Driven Snow by Bruce Nauman and 9 H-Shapes by Robert Morris emphasise space and the position of the observer within that. In his photographic works John Baldessari plays with the difference between image and interpretation. For Bernd & Hilla Becher photography is a means to chart turn-of-the-century industrial architecture as objectively as possible. The installation by Dan Graham confronts observers with themselves and with their behaviour. Angela Bulloch belongs to that younger generation of artists who depict the themes of this older generation in an entirely different manner. The video works reveal how important the human body is as a communication means and as a tool with which we experience reality. Pressetext
