Otto Dix

Otto Dix (1891-1969) was one of the leading figures of the “New Objectivity” movement. The present retrospective is the first major exhibition to be devoted to this German artist in Spain. It includes 84 works – oil paintings, gouaches, watercolours and drawings – created by an artist who lived through the most significant events of the 20th century: the Weimar Republic, National Socialism and the two world wars.

Through 35 oils, 27 gouaches and watercolours and 22 drawings, the exhibition covers almost all of Dix’s career from 1914 to 1969, the year of his death. It places particular emphasis on the 1920s and 1930s, which he spent in the great metropolis of Berlin and in Dresden and which can be considered the most important years in his career. Among the works on display is the large preparatory study for the triptych Metropolis (184 x 405 cm) of 1927-28, Dix’s most important work together with War (1932).

The exhibition has been organised by the Fundación Juan March, advised by Ulrike Lorenz, director of the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie in Ratisbon, a specialist in the work of Dix and author of the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s drawings. She has also written all the entries in the catalogue which accompanies the present exhibition.
