In YDV-Young Dictator’s Village the Italian artist Paulo Chiasera (1978) explores the phenomenon ‘the aesthetics of ideology’. With this project- that consists of a series of paintings, a collection of gouaches and a video installation- the Bologna-based artist continues his visual research into the ‘artistic processing of history’ and notions such as power, dominance and violence, group dynamics and loss of control. In YDV - that premiered in the former museum of revolution (Moscou 2005)- Chiasera focuses on the ‘design’ utilised by ‘historical and contemporary dictators’ such as Castro, Franco, Hitler, Idi Amin.

Chiasera is interested in the ‘formalistic’ or ‘visual’ aspects of totalitarian systems. How are these ‘supreme rulers’ represented (in the media), which is the power of the symbols and signs they use to create their own mythology, how do they transform themselves into ‘living icons’ ?
