Pel.lícula Abstracta I i altres dibuixos (Abstract Film I and other drawings), is the title of Patricia Dauder´s second solo show at ProjecteSD. The exhibition is the result of two main areas of experimentation in the artist´s recent work. On one hand, her will to analize the image process of creation and typologies through different media. Secondly, the artist puts together her own works with a collection of found images that she slightly manipulates to construct a personal visual map, in an attempt to relate archive iconography with personal imagery.

Patricia Dauder has developed a growing interest in working with collected images and the moving image. This approach responds to a will for contrasting “real” and “ficticious”, and a necessity to break with the physical and conceptual limitations of the conception of drawing. Considering drawing as a space where multiple forms and subspaces are projected and accumulated both on its physical and temporary surface. Pel.lícula abstracta I (Abstract Film I), 2005, is an animation film resulting from recomposing and connecting images based on formal associations, and comes out as an exercise of visual perception. Pel.lícula abstracta I is shown together with a group of drawings which also appear in the film. In some of them a more consistent structure is perceived, extending outwards from the centre to the edges of the drawing, producing a sensation of dynamism and infinite space. This idea of infinite space, of material destructuralization, and time expansion, are concepts explored in previous Dauder´s works. Unrecognizable shapes appear as well, sometimes resembling natural structures, others cultural-type symbols. They all share a formal undefinition and were made from the idea of non-representation, or the will to not represent any item, object or precise idea.

Premsa I, (Press I) is built as a selection of images collected from newspapers during the last two years, based upon formal features. Most images have an organic, structural component, sometimes a consequence of a certain action or accident. They have been cropped from larger images, so the original context which gave meaning to them is lost, and they remain as details, forms, or undated events, although in some cases, one can still distinguish the nature or cause of the first picture (war, outer space, nature, explosions, etc..). The idea behind this work is to separate image from original message, to neutralize, and give a more universal, undatable perspective to what we are looking at.

Surfers, is a Super 8 mm film, portraying a group of surfers on the see in one steady single long shot. Aesthetically, it reminds of certain compositions that Dauder has created on her drawings: a big space sprewading over most of the frame (see) and some scattered dots within this space. The film shows, in a short-time lapse, the surfers moving to and fro on the see, awaiting the wave drive. Their movements depending on those of nature, manifesting itself with imposing force. In the artist´s own words, “it is both a physical and spiritual scene representing a longed for essentiality. A paradigmatic image widely represented in art history, man in front of nature”.

The whole installation, constitutes a logical step on Dauder´s developments. To her interest for non-representation as a starting point to let personal images arise on a unconcious level, she now adds a growing interest for analising our visual iconography and its symbolic and historical content, trying to approach the inner world sphere and the exterior world. This dual categorisation can also be found in previous works, full-empty, content-container, interior-exterior, materiality-unmateriality, and reflects her particular vision of reality. For this installation, the artist has wanted to construct a perceptual, rhythmic, and time-oriented structure. Every image can be related to the other, with its similarities and differences, and these associations can lead to a new meaningful visual semantics.

Patricia Dauder´s work (Barcelona, 1973) has been exhibited in several national and international art centres. Last 2002, she was presented at Los Excesos de La mente at Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (2002) She showed at the last edition of Bienal Leandre Cristòfol at the Centre L´art La Panera in Lleida (2004). Recently her work has been presented at Centro Sperimentale per le Arti Contemporanee (Caraglio, Italy). Her new work Pel.lícula abstracta I, presented for the first time at ProjecteSD has been produced with a fellowship awarded by Fundación Arte y Derecho last year.
