press release

Singaporean performance art has experienced an unusually prolific boom over the last several years by mixing local elements with the ferment of changes in the art world. Organizations such as Substation, The Artist Village and The Future of Imagination international performance art festival have led the way in promoting this phenomenon.

Chia Chu Yia, Amanda Heng, Wen Lee and Jason Lim are key figures in South East Asian performance art.

In her artistic practice (performance, installation), Amanda Heng investigates the clash between Eastern and Western values so characteristic to Singapore. She is interested in identity along with its gender, social and cultural components as well as the ability to shape it. Jason Lim has radically moved assumptions about ceramics as a discipline, opening its potential as a medium in installation and performance. He represented Singapore at the 2007 Venice Biennale. Wen Leeinvestigates individual identity in the social context as conditioned by ideologies and value systems. In the Yellow Man cycle of performances, he underscores the ethnic roots of Singaporean citizens. Chia Chu Yia paints, works in installations and performances; he is interested in the modeling of identity depending on environment. In his performances, he utilizes natural materials that emphasize the meaning of specific places and directions as well as mirrors that serve as metaphors for discovering and reflecting one's interior.
