press release

Frederieke Taylor gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new photoworks by internationally renowned artist Peter Hutchinson. British born artist Peter Hutchinson is well known for his narrative documentations from as far back as the 60s and 70s of subtle interventions in striking natural environments, including coral beds and lava fields. Through his land works composed of plants and rocks, like the temporary Thrown Rope pieces and later more permanent installations in Germany, he has altered the landscape. Of these interventions he created photographic collages with poetic texts that, according to Carter Ratcliff in a recent article in Art in America, qualify: "Hutchinson as one of the inventors of photo-based conceptual art". Instead of actually altering the landscape itself, Peter Hutchinson also creates interventions through realistic photographic collages of flowers, trees and mountains. The photo works on display at the gallery are new interpretations of these collage landscapes. By including large images of flowers, most of which the artist has grown himself, the landscapes turn into more surrealistic surroundings. The same treatment is used for his collages of cityscapes, mixing up various locales visited by the artist, even from different continents. Presented with a sometimes deceptive modesty, the colorful and intense collages are of a repetitive beauty. Combining elements of nature and architecture, the artist creates his own, biographical environment. Peter Hutchinson has had solo exhibitions in many major museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. He participated in recent group exhibitions at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, Spain, the Frac Basse-Normandie, Caen, France, the MIT Visual Art Center, Cambridge, MA, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Japan and in the City of Düsseldorf, Germany. His work is included in many public and private collections. Pressetext
