photo basel’s main aspiration is to be an international art fair dedicated to photography based art from classic to contemporary and which fosters the dialogue and exchange between photography aficionados.

In order to gain maximum momentum, photo basel takes place during Art Basel week.

From its foundation year in 2015, photo basel has since become established as one of the most prominent photography fairs in the German speaking world. This year, a contingent of 38 exhibitors (sixteen nations and five continents), present works of art from far over one hundred artists – the most recognized artists exhibited at photo basel 2017 are: Werner Bischof, René Burri, Simone Kappeler, Arnold Odermatt, Edward Burtynsky, Joel-Peter Witkin, Herb Ritts, Erwin Olaf, Andreas Fux, Nan Goldin, Imogen Cunningham, Luigi Ghirri, Gilles Caron, Michael Kenna, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Paolo Ventura, Jill Freedmann, Robert Mapplethorpe, Roger Ballen, Georges Rousse, René Groebli, Saul Leiter, Sascha Goldberger, Vincent Fournier, and many more.

As in previous years, photo basel tries to highlight non-profit institutions and introduce them to a broader public.

This year, for the third time in a row, vfg Nachwuchsförderpreis (Switzerland’s most prominent annual youth photography award) will be featured at the fair with the 2017 nominees.

As every year, photo basel is proud to support a school of arts – this year, HGK Basel under the supervision of Chus Martinez will occupy and transform a special room at photo basel.

In addition, we are excited to be amongst the first to show „tribe talents“ – a cooperation with tribe magazine from Dubai, showing the upcoming generation of photographers from the Middle East.

As a first, photo basel will showcase tape/basel – the moving image sector that is programmed by Canadian/Swiss Curator Chantal Molleur. tape/basel is committed to the presentation of innovative, engaging and at times provoking artistic propositions based on film. This year, tape/basel will showcase a selection of works put forward by the galleries of photo/basel as well as by invited guests. This first edition of tape/basel features nine recent international works coming from six countries which are represented by five galleries. Featured artists are: Stacey Steers, Deborah Oropallo, Venice Biennale 2017 artist - Mika Taanila, Kerstin Honeit, Nemanja Nikolić, Chou Ching Hui, Almond Chu, Yvon Chabrowski, Olivier Cheval. All of the selected artists are concerned with issues related to performance, 3D animation, animated collage and animated photomontage.
