Galeria Distrito Cu4tro presents in Madrid an exhibition of the most recent work of Pia Fries . Her large paintings and vivid colours have awakened international interest in the last few years. Born in Beromunster, Switzerland in 1955, Pia Fries lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Recently the artist uses silk screen printing applied to the wooden mounting where in such a way the paint comes through to the oil. In such cases the image of one material, like that which the painter uses in her studio, is photographed earlier by her and then put into the picture by way of the silk screen process. Strips of paper can be used, put by hand into irregular and three dimensional shapes. Or there can be huge lumps of papier maché which give the work cavities like potholes, with which she puts in place at the final stage of the work a sort of metalanguage of wide resonance. In the middle of doing what looks deceptively chaotic there is a coherence reflecting an artist who does not act simply on impulse but from a rational base, although the painting, driven by its own limitations and properties can provide surprises which were not totally anticipated in the initial conception.

Amongst other recent work presented in Distrito Cu4tro under the title Ornithology is the series Les Aquarelles de Leningrad
