Pipilotti Rist

This young Swiss artist works in the area of the media and experimental video art. With the help of special effects, pictorial distortions and aesthetic effects taken from vídeo-clips, Rist articulates the visual language of “thinking in images” (Babias), and focuses on the topics of love, death, violence, Eros, birth and daily experience. One of the hallmarks of her work, are the forms of feminine expression, such as make-up and clothing. Rist work on the basis of these feminine clichés, transforming them into hallucinatory effects. While consciously avoiding the visual language of the mass media, she explores fast cutting techniques, passing from clear and brilliant images to black images that emanate from the monitors and conjure up the idea of unconscious people. Pipilotti Rist prefers video installations because “they are a multipurpose space, where it is possible to mix together painting, technology, movement, poetry, life, death, sexuality and friendship”.
