POST-WORLD WAR II TRENDS

The encounter between American artists and representatives of the European avant-garde - Surrealists and abstract artists - who immigrated to the United States during World War II, crucially influenced the development of American art, and constituted the driving force behind Abstract Expressionism which burst upon the New York scene in the late 1940s.

The exhibition focuses on the precedents and trends of the New York School as expressed in the work of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman; shown alongside them are works by Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Frank Stella, who represent approaches that came as a response to the expressive contents of Abstract Expressionism.

The exhibition includes first-rate works from the Museum Collection, as well as loans from the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and from private collectors.
