press release

Projects 83 introduces the work of Monika Sosnowska, (b. 1972), an artist living in Warsaw, Poland. Sosnowska creates architecturally structured installations that dramatically transform a viewer’s perception and experience of a space. She makes her works in response to a given setting, and this installation has been conceived specifically for The Museum of Modern Art. Often entirely engulfing a room, Sosnowska’s installations produce an effect that might be described as being inside a sculpture. The artist develops these projects via a process based on paper maquettes that are beautiful works of art in themselves. Although Sosnowska has exhibited extensively in Europe during the past five years, this is her first solo exhibition at a gallery or museum in the United States. This project is presented in the Contemporary Galleries, adjacent to the exhibition Out of Time: Contemporary Art from the Collection.

Organized by Ann Temkin, Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture.

The Projects series is made possible by the Elaine Dannheisser Projects Endowment Fund and by The Junior Associates of The Museum of Modern Art and the JA Endowment Committee. Additional support is provided by Jerry I. Speyer and Katherine G. Farley and by Peter Norton and the Peter Norton Family Foundation.
