Prudencio Irazabal

The Jack Shainman Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Prudencio Irazabal. The paintings on view in this exhibition mark a return of strong, bold color in Irazabal’s work while continuing his unique approach to the physical construction of the painted surface. Irazabal’s paintings eschew drawing or any visible mark making as the basis for the creation of abstract form. Denying one’s ability to read them as a series of events or decisions made in time, Irazabal’s technique is of course just that, a slow meticulous process of accretion. Built from many layers, the color in Irazabal’s paintings creates remarkable spatial effects without acknowledging the physical effort needed to achieve them. Independence of color, separated from line and geometry, is one of the hallmarks of Irazabal’s unique achievement as a painter. The thin layers of color he applies are put down without concern for dramatic gesture but rather with an approach that allows each color to retain it’s individuality. Interacting in an increasingly complex series of relationships with the subsequent and antecedent layers of paint, the color in Irazabal’s paintings becomes a totality of ever shifting interactions and imprecise forms. Recent shows include solo exhibitions at Galeria Helga de Alvear, Madrid, Spain, Speilhaus Morrison Galerie, Berlin, Germany, Andrehn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm, Sweden, and Palacio de los Condes de Gabia, Granada, Spain (catalogue). A solo exhibition is planned for 2005 at the Artium Museum in Vitoria, Spain.
