Rendez—Vous I Biennale de Lyon 2017 Jeune création internationale from 20 September 2017 to 07 January 2018

Rendez-vous, an international platform for young artists, was created in 2002 by the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art with the support of the Région Rhône-Alpes. It represents an unprecedented collaboration of the four French institutions that provide its artistic direction: the Higher National School of Fine Arts of Lyon, the Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, the Lyon Biennale and the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art.

Made possible by the complementarity of these institutions, Rendez-vous proposes to reinforce the connections between different domains of competence, in this way opening increased perspectives to the chosen artists.

Rendez-vous is resolutely devoted to showcasing young French and international creation. Rendez-vous is central to the 2017 Lyon Biennale and is a veritable “antechamber of expectation”. In the past it has exhibited –amongst others, and well before they took their place on the international scene– Thai artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul (winner of the Palme d’or at Cannes in 2010), British artist Ryan Gander, Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg (Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2009), and French artists Guillaume Leblon and Julien Prévieux (Marcel Duchamp Award, 2014), guests of the Lyon Biennale in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Rendez-vous is presented at the IAC during the Lyon Biennale, and, the following year, in various forms, outside Europe. In 2008, for instance, Rendez-vous was held at the Shanghai Art Museum, with parallel residencies in Moscow, Beijing, Miami and Buenos Aires; in 2010, Rendez-vous took part in the Shanghai Biennale; in 2012, it was presented at the South African National Gallery in Cape Town; in 2015, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore at LASALLE College of the Arts; in 2017 will be held at the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing; in 2018, Rendez-vous will be presented in the McaM of Shanghai.

Rendez-vous gives 20 artists their first major exhibition in a renowned institution through an international dialogue juxtaposing perspectives, practices, and audiences, with each edition being more fruitful than the last.
Since 2009, ten curators from ten international biennials have been invited to contribute to Rendez-vous. Each edition is the opportunity to invite new biennials.

Rendez-vous consists in:
10 French artists or group of artists living in France,
10 artists proposed by 10 biennials around the world,
1 invited graphic designer: Rendez-vous 2017’s visual identity is created by Lena Aragua.
