press release

Utilising Kalmar Art Museum's own collection and works borrowed from other museum collections, a personal picture of Swedish art over the last 200 years is presented in the exhibition RETRO - a Swedish romantic perspective. One of the period's key features is romanticism with signs of the sublime, historical, nationalistic and personal, thereof the title. These reflections are part of the foundations of the museum. But many of the artists in the exhibition have also been subjects of the romantic myth of "the artist" as the lonely, unhappy genius. It is interesting to view these artists in the light of contemporary art, characterised by its ambivalent relationship with artistic tradition, grand narratives and the power of the market. The exhibition has been made possible through generous loans from the National Museum and the Modern Museum in Stockholm.

In the exhibition one can view the works of Karl Andersson, Ivan Aguéli, Christian Berg, Richard Bergh, Dick Bengtsson, Otto G Carlsund, Lena Cronqvist, Siri Derkert, Per Ekström, Carl Eldh, Elias Erdtman, Sven Erixson, Carl Johan Fahlcrantz, Öyvind Fahlström, Peter Frie, Albert Theodor Gellerstedt, Åke Göransson, Carl Fredrik Hill, Karl Isakson, Ernst Josephson, Axel Kargel, Nils Kreuger, Marcus Larson, Tuija Lindström, Margareta Linton, Sven Ljungberg, Tyra Lundgren, Marcus Larson, Eva Löfdahl, Ivar Morsing, Raine Navin, Takashi Naraha, Nils Nilsson, Vera Nilsson, Karl Nordström, Gustav Wilhelm Palm, Axel Peter, Magnus Petersson, Lennart Sjögren, Per Skogler, Christine Sundberg, Carl Wahlbom, Dan Wolgers.
