press release

Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Richard Artschwager. This will be Artschwager's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2000.

Painted between 2004 and 2005, these new paintings incorporate Artschwager's signature use of crafted frames, demarcating the space around the picture while still remaining a part of it, blurring the boundaries of the pictorial space. As with his sculpture and installations, Artschwager challenges the elements of painting itself in regards to material, space, form, perspective and color.

However these new paintings introduce a less frequent element in Artschwager's past work - a heavy use of saturated color. His previous paintings were mostly done in grisaille - the use of a single color, especially gray, designed to produce a three-dimensional effect, with the occasional hint of color seen through segments of Formica or a small tinted area. In using these vibrant hues the figures are flattened and put in conflict with the raised spiraling texture of the painting's surface, further confounding the character of the image.

Richard Artschwager is an internationally exhibited artist whose work has been shown in venues such as: the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Tate Gallery, London. He has recently won the renowned and prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize in Cologne, Germany.
