press release

Opening: Friday November 16th, 6 pm at de Appel

De Appel presents the first retrospective of the American artist Richard Hawkins (USA, 1961). Since the early 1990s Hawkins has developed an extensive body of work including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, artists' books and collages typified by an extraordinarily flexible aesthetic and wide ranging thematic variation. Throughout the Appel exhibition, Hawkins' works look both critically and indulgently at social, cultural and historical phenomena to create a promiscuous blend of works connecting, for example, French Decadence with haunted houses, contemporary sextourism and Native American history with Roman paganism and the vibrant hues of non-representational paintings with the blush on a handsome popstar's cheek.
