“Ensor is able to separate the paint from the color. The color becomes real. This is why he could say, the impressionists could neither understand light nor color.”
(Richard Tuttle, 2015)

The American artist Richard Tuttle has accepted Mu.ZEE’s invitation to put on a solo exhibition and then extended it with a second, parallel exhibition. Since the autumn of 2015 he has been researching James Ensor’s use of colour as well as his ideas about colour. Besides studying the artist’s paintings he has also been using the four artist’s palettes in the museum’s archive collection. Tuttle’s research will culminate in a solo presence in dialogue with Ensor’s paintings in the new wing of the museum, supplemented with art objects and works of art from a variety of cultures and periods.
