Robert Beck: Nature Morte

CRG is pleased to announce our next exhibition will be an installation of new work by New York artist, Robert Beck. Organized around the theme of “nature morte”, it is his first one-person exhibition with the gallery. Beck will present an array of conceptually related, though formally diverse, pieces within the confines of a single installation. Created partly in response to the media’s “kids who kill” stories, each work is a representative “part object” of a much larger cultural whole – home, school, or office, for example. From the handmade to the manufactured, the artwork to the artifact, these seemingly disparate elements, include the following: a hand-painted camouflaged pup-tent; a memorial videotape set to “soft rock” ballads of the mid-1970’s; a black and white 8 x 10 inch family photograph framed by deer legs; a spontaneous floral shrine; a theatrical set of a domestic interior; a taxidermy squirrel-form cast in mortician’s wax; among others. With this installation of often contradictory cultural “evidence”, Beck creates a world that is at once familiar and strange, sentimental and unsettling, explicit and enigmatic. Robert Beck is a recent recipient of The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. There will be a reception for the artist February 19, 6 – 8 PM. Visual material is available upon request.
