press release

GRIFFIN is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions: late paintings by Robert Rauschenberg in the main gallery and new work by Greg Colson in the west gallery.

One of the most prolific and influential artists of the postwar period, Robert Rauschenberg has created an astonishing variety of works during a career spanning more than fifty years. Challenging nearly all the prevailing assumptions about the visual arts of his time, Rauschenberg continues to approach his art with a spirit of invention and with a quest for new materials, technologies, and ideas.

In the works included in this exhibition, ranging from 1995 – 2001, Rauschenberg employs a transfer process, which he began using the in 1950s, to overlay images onto various materials such as canvas, polylaminate or paper. In these works, Rauschenberg exploits the semi-transparent characteristic of vegetable dyes to create works that integrate a myriad of visual imagery in a complex manner. The incorporation of Rauschenberg’s own photographs into these works creates narratives that are both deeply personal while also referencing a wide range of universally recognizable images.
