Born in Melbourne in 1958, London-based artist Ron Mueck worked as a puppet maker, a special effects artist for film and television, and in advertising before entering the art world almost by accident in the mid 1990s. His sculptures have since been shown internationally, including at the Venice Biennale in 2001.

Pregnant woman 2002, made while Mueck was Associate Artist at the National Gallery, London, is one of his most ambitious works to date. Made predominantly of fibreglass and standing at 2.5 metres, the sculpture is monumental; at once extraordinarily lifelike, yet hyper-real. The display of this important work from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia also includes preparatory sketches, maquettes by the artist and a documentary showing the artist at work.
