press release

The Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts celebrates Rubens, a painter deeply rooted in the history of Flanders: the biggest event on this scale since the Antwerp exhibition in 1977. The exhibition includes paintings, oil sketches, drawings and tapestries. This retrospect offers a glimpse of the diversity of the artist’s artistic activity. A writer, diplomat, inventor and colourist, Rubens had many talents outside of being, along with Caravaggio, one of the inventors of modern painting. It is both his painting style and this humanist dimension which will be emphasised by the Lille exhibition. It is also the man himself and his passion for art which will be celebrated, with a twin exhibition organised, naturally, in the town of Antwerp, where he lived: Rubens Collector. Pressetext
