Leisure gives us time to think. Poise and stillness make for conditions more readily useful for broader, deeper, perhaps more sophisticated thought. Not that action and velocity are somehow vapid. The slow elegance of a languid pace makes for clearings whereas vivacity fills them.

The work of Sarah Ryan does not oppose popular culture, fragments of a lifestyle many would conceive as fashionable and aspiration are depicted, instead it appears to slip quietly away from frenzied behaviour and reactionary posturing. The trappings of a fashionable life, the clothes, the décor, the architecture, become calming reminders of the relationships that move in and about them; humanity is restored to commodities.

The subtle shifting movement, the casual glimpsing scenario, the reaching for depth, living as depicted by Ryan is a process, ones life being a subtle flow and not a collection of disconnection¹s. Ryan¹s lenticular photographs transform the artifice of representation into a more humane articulation by draining a moment of its urgency. Paul Donald
