Saskia Olde Wolbers

Saskia Olde Wolbers makes fascinating video films in which word and image are combined in the most extraordinary way. For every film, she builds miniature film sets in a large aquarium containing plant-like forms and architectural constructions. We see dripping foliage, monochrome sets and moving forms or creatures.

What is quite extraordinary is that rather than being the result of digital image manipulation, it is all filmed using analogue technology. The slow, memorable images and the soundtrack by composer Daniel Pemberton are combined with familiar and unfamiliar elements to draw the viewer into a parallel world.

Told in voice-over, the story is always based on real events to which fictitious elements are added. The narrative conjures up free associations for the images, but without guiding the viewer or being illustrative.

Besides a video work in the permanent collection in Gallery 2, M is also presenting three monumental video installations which are shown in Belgium for the first time. Saskia Olde Wolbers has exhibited widely at home and abroad, including recently at the Wiener Secession, the Goetz Collection in Munich, Galerie Diana Stigter in Amsterdam and Maureen Paley in London.
