Saturday Sessions

Lauren Devine and Patrik Sandberg present an audiovisual experience featuring performances by Tamaryn and Mirror Mirror, with an immersive visual landscape by installation crew Thunder Horse Video. The one-time-only collaborative event will produce a synthesized encounter with Tamaryn’s colossal and dense sound and the natural landscape that inspired it, exaggerated to unnatural proportion within MoMA PS1’s physical space. Mirror Mirror’s lead-in performance, with costumes by Lauren Devine, will further feature a synchronized video by artists Robert Bittenbender and Casey Jane Ellison.

TAMARYN are a New York via San Francisco hypnotic psych duo consisting of singer Tamaryn and guitarist Rex John Shelverton. Accompanied by a full band, these purveyors of reverb-drenched, atmospheric haze rock have been hailed by critics as new guardians of the titanic sound carved out by predecessors such as the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, with a unique and signature desert squall that is equal parts heavy-hitting, weightless, and profoundly original. Their 2010 debut album, The Waves, out on Mexican Summer, proved to be a year-end list staple, catalyzing a ferocious and focused start to a very promising musical odyssey to come.

Mirror Mirror is a New York-based group that blends dark psychedelic pop, sci-fi electronics, windswept vocals, and noise experimentation into a Next Age sound. Straddling the worlds of art and music, they are known for their collaborations with dancers, costume designers, and video artists to create elaborate performances based on concepts of ritual and psychological space. They have been profiled in NME, Interview, and ArtForum. In 2011, they will be releasing a 12" for the FRKWYS series as well as a full-length Interiors LP, both on RVNG Intl.

Thunder Horse Video is a post-matrix media art collective and production company consisting of Jude MC, Taran Allen, and Alex Gvojic. The trio has turned heads via their recent collaborations with performance artists such as Gatekeeper, SALEM, White Car, and Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never, Games). THV’s aim is to elaborate upon conventional ideas of live performance stage effect, and although their approach can be hosted in numerous cinematic formats, it is antithetically two-dimensional—an assemblage of aesthetic experience.

Patrik Sandberg is a New York City-based writer, media artist, and negative Internet aesthete. He is currently Online Editor of V and VMAN magazines, as well as a founding member of multimedia collective DIS magazine. His writing has appeared in V, VMAN, Dazed & Confused, The New York Times’ Moment blog, Flaunt, K48, and many other publications both physical and virtual.

Lauren Devine is a New York City-based composite of tan and icy lilac; a designer and enthusiast. For the past five years, she has been contemplating textures and naming colors for major fashion brands. She recently hosted a one-night artist’s residency in her hair. Devine has worked with DIS magazine, K48, Pâté magazine, Ryan Trecartin for W, and with Mirror Mirror in performance and video. In 2011, she will continue to costume performance artists and bands, and plans to release her collaborative debut full-length album.
