The six artists in this exhibition recognize that the desire to generalize identity politics into clean, didactic binaries is futile, and they allow the self-expression problem to remain inconclusive. What unites their work is a common interest in the effects of self-objectification using a medium that they are well aware both facilitates and complicates that process. Less interested in using received images to mediate the self, these artists reclaim the subject from her postmodern displacement and allow her to be self-absorbed. Using their own bodies, paired occasionally with those of others, they position themselves as director and model. Their photographs are simultaneously exercises in self-discovery, cultural investigation, and photographic seeing.
