Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents «Unavoidable and Unnecessary» – an immense personal retrospective exhibition of works by Servey Shutov. During more than 30 years of his creative career, Sergey Shutov (born in 1955, Potsdam) – painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer and author of installations – became famous in all areas of mainstream and underground art of Soviet times and today’s Russia. Successful collaboration at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, an the Museum of Oriental Art and at the Moscow Zoo, lecturing at the Moscow Planetarium, work for radio stations and “Popular mechanics” band, designing the issues of “Ptiuch” magazine and participation in the cult “Assa” movie, membership in the Academy of Various Arts, teaching at the Moscow Art Laboratory of New Media, presentation of Russia at the Vienne Biennale and nomination for the Federal Prize – even this impressive list doesn’t include all the episodes of Shutov’s bright creative biography.

“Unavoidable and Unnecessary” exhibition hosted by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art unites Shutov’s old and new works – well-known and popular objects as well as pieces that have never been on view. According to the artist’s own words, “the necessity of such an exhibition is obvious because there’s an assortment of works that are of no interest for curators or gallerists, but are still fascinating for artists and viewers”. Along with renowned hits, Shutov is planning to exhibit some works and projects that are extremely important for him personally, but haven’t gained attention from the part of specialists and, perhaps, went ahead of their time. Works of different years gathered in one exhibition space – paintings, multimedia installations, objects, and graphics among them – allow viewers to look at the familiar projects from another angle and to open new sides of Shutov’s creation. Exhibiting for the first time his nearly 30-year-old works together with new ones, Sergey Shutov “who agrees and disagrees with everyone”, as a colleague of the artist neatly describes him, refused any help from the curators and decided to take full responsibility for the dramatic structure of this huge exhibition.
