In 2009, while working on her film sited in the courtyards of the Polish city Łódź, Pódworka, Sharon Lockhart met a young girl named Milena who has remained a focus of Lockhart’s attention. Continuing to visit Milena in Poland and deepening ties to her community, Lockhart worked with Milena as she moved from childhood to adolescence. During the past two summers, Lockhart staged retreats based in theories of movement, education, and creativity for a group of teenagers from the home for girls where Milena has been living. In concert with this activity, Lockhart has studied the Polish-Jewish pedagogue Janusz Korczak, an advocate for honoring the child’s voice. As part of an ongoing photographic and cinematic project, Lockhart exhibits visually arresting images that quietly attest to the relevance of these young lives.
