press release

The Laboratorio 987, a room for specific artistic projects of the MUSAC is an adjoining space that functions independently from the general programme of the museum.

The first artist who participates in this space is the Leonese artist, Silvia Prada (Ponferrada, 1969), with the project, Hot or Not. Tania Pardo is the curator and the one in charge of the programming of the Laboratorio 987 for 2005-2006.

The work of Silvia Prada encompasses a cumulus of references and reflections about current iconic myths and youth culture rooted in globalized and capitalist societies. She offers a world based on media bombardments and above all, in MTV videoclips, trendy magazines and other sub-genres of youth culture. Her illustrations, done with graphite, show a gallery of celebrities taken from the world of televisión, pornography or comics, from Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears or Jennifer López, up to the photographer, Richardson.

As the artist explains, the show Hot or Not, “shall be the development of different situations of the more contemporary visual culture, taking into account ‘the HOTtest’ among them: the hottest in music, the hottest in film, fashion, pornography, trends (Gwen Stefani, Macaulay Culkin, Devon Aoki, Karl Lagerfeld, etc.), artefacts of association and diffusion of cultural convictions.”

The exhibition is composed of three parts: a mural work that will occupy 65% of the exhibition space (of 185 m 2) that will be complemented by drawings on paper. To finalize, and as a conceptual development, the production of advertising posters for the public space will be carried out.
