Louisiana’s collection of video is not so large, measured against the international institutions with whom we collaborate. On the other hand it is important. It includes a number of seminal works from the last few decades, works that will be indispensable when the big history of this area of art is one day written.

Since the emergence of the video medium at the end of the 1960s Louisiana has often presented video as an element in various exhibitions, but alongside this, in the course of the last decade, this category of work type has been given an excellent representation among the international artists in Louisiana’s collection. The exhibition Sip My Ocean will give the public an overview of this aspect of the museum’s collection for the first time, and will present four striking new acquisitions of works by some of the most significant artists of the period: Candice Breitz, Runa Islam, Aernout Mik and Bill Viola. Today the museum’s video collection not only offers insight into the historical development of the medium, but also, through the latest new acquisitions, a chance to take the pulse of the contemporary international scene – the most recently acquired works have all been created over the last two years by some of the most prominent artists working in the field.
