press release

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey has always concerned itself with bringing to its public some of the most interesting and avante-garde proposals being put forth today on an international level. In view of this, MARCO now presents a group exhibition of works by British artists.

Sodio y asfalto. Arte británico contemporáneo en México [Sodium & Asphalt. British Contemporary Art in Mexico] was organized by MARCO in collaboration with the British Council Mexico and the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo bringing together twelve artists that have taken the city as their theme, a space for exploration and exhibition.

The city as a concept and as a place is dissected, inspected, analyzed and celebrated by this group of artists that live and work in Glasgow and London, as well as Mexico City and New York and who have found in this urban environment their motive for inspiration.

They come from various generations ranging in age from twenty-five to forty-nine and their origins are also diverse, but they maintain affinities and convergences between methodologies, the media they employ and the concerns that motivate them.

These artists are women and men who utilize sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, printmaking and video to project their discourses on the city. Their works allow for a new look at our surroundings, they invite us to reflect and finally to establish a dialogue between cities and their inhabitants.
