press release

Johan Deumens Gallery presents an exhibition on lines and maps with a special focus on conceptual and gestural approaches. The exhibition shows how primary steps in an artistic practice are about idiosyncratic perception. Splendid Isolation is an exhibition that offers a range of visually enticing works on paper which unite artists' fragments from the different perspectives of culture versus nature. At first these works evoke a familiar context while at the same time, the personal perspectives and the rules of transformation through which the artists work create a new way of seeing. The term isolation is here meant as a means to eliminate noise and provide clarity. "This is is my perspective, and topic. Here it is.", as Rudi Fuchs typified Sol Lewitt's Wall Drawing #1084, namely an art that is clear, laconic, and rich in variation. (cited from de De Groene Amsterdammer, 15 Nov. 2012, p. 49)

About the work Atlas Writing by Kasper Andreasen What if the lines on a map no longer correspond to the physical world around us? The collection of 9 prints embody how mapping is a gesture of writing and drawing. In this sense, the images focus on mark-making structures which remind us of topographic maps, landscape sketches and writing. Atlas Writing shows how graphical signs can create an unknown territory, a 'place' where one can project potential ideas. Throughout the series, the development of 'landscape to map' is supported by the different types of marks. The negative printing of these images offers new -scapes to the viewer which have their roots in historical documents such as photographs, medieval maps and notations.
