Sreshta Premnath. LEO

Sreshta Premnath´s show LEO (procedures in search of an original index) continues his exploration of specific representations of power that have been repeatedly used historically and cross-culturally. He uses videos, photographs and paintings to enhance that the repetition of one symbol opens the contradictory possibilities of fortifying the symbol´s power and of exhausting and devaluing the representational potential of that same symbol. The artist points out:"The lion is especially useful as a specimen for this investigation as a creature that has historically symbolized power and through whose subjugation (through hunting, taming and training) people have articulated their own positions of power."

The artist received his MFA from The Milton Avery Graduate School of Fine Art at Bard College and his BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art. He was a 2008 studio fellow at The Whitney Independent Study Program and attended Skowhegan in 2009.His work has been shown at Rotunda Gallery, Art in General, Bose Pacia Gallery, Thomas Erben Gallery in New York City and at the Art Statements section at Art|41|Basel. Often using strategies of negation, erasure, fracture and displacement, his work explores how otherness is constituted through complex matrices of knowledge, power, subjugation and mediation.
