Stephen Willats - Strange Attractor

Stephen Willats, born in 1943, is one of the most important and influential English artists of his generation, and repeatedly serves as a point of reference for the most current and contemporary directions in art. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he was one of the few serious proponents of international conceptual art in England.

Many books and exhibitions have focused on his work which today can be found in many European museums. Willats’ techniques include drawing, photographic documentation, and computer-driven communication devices and animation.

Important solo exhibitions may include Whitechapel Gallery and Raven Row in London (2014), the South London Gallery (2012), Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe (2010), Tate Modern, London, and Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Siegen (2006), the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (1993), the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1978), and the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands (1980). Willats has also been part of numerous group exhibitions, involving Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2013/14), Generali Foundation, Vienna (2013), Central Museum, Utrecht (2010; 2012), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2008), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2008), the Ludwig Museum, Cologne (2007), the FRAC (1996; 1997), as well as Biennales in Berlin, Paris, Venice and Shanghai (1979; 1982; 2004; 2014).

Stephen Willats lives and works in London and has been the editor and publisher of Control Magazine since 1962.
