press release

This exhibition will document the recent explosion of creative vitality in the city of Tijuana, México, and will also explore the subtle shift in focus from art about the border experience to art that takes advantage of a new type of accelerated urbanism being pioneered in developing cities around the world. It will subsequently tour to one or two museums in Mexico as well as other museums in the United States. This exhibition will travel to the Instituto de México/Mexico Cultural Institute in Washington D.C. from February 16 through April 21, 2007. The remaining tour is currently being designed. The accompanying catalogue (in English and Spanish) will provide cultural and historical context to the arts community in Tijuana, and will contain a number of scholarly essays by writers from both sides of the border.

This exhibition will be on view at both of MCASD's locations. At MCASD La Jolla, works made between 1970 and 1990 (by approximately eleven artists of the previous generation) will be installed to provide historical perspective on the newer works on view.
