Surface and deep / 5 actions
表層と深層−5つの行為

The 9th exhibition of SOU - JR Sojiji Station Art Project introduces five works by Shigeru Izumi, Naoto Iguchi, Thomas Neumann, Shun Omiyama and Yukiko Yamazaki. We "see the surface" of a painting or photograph and "feel it deeply". There is a very complex and rich relationship between seeing and feeling. On the other hand, its mechanism is like a mystery that cannot be solved. We begin by looking at the artwork, but the "surface" of the painting or photograph is like the "surface of the sea," and while we look at the beautiful sea, we also feel the presence of a large, deep world below the surface.
The artist wrestles with it in its depths and sublimates it to the surface in his own unique way.
Inside the work is a vast amount of the artist's experience, technique, concepts, contemplations and struggles. When they eventually become works of art, the depths of the work will work on the depths of each of us who see them. And once again, we begin by looking at the work.

SOU - JR Sojiji Station Art Project was launched with the opening of JR Soji Station in March 2018, with the hope of creating an environment where people can encounter art in their daily lives and to provide an opportunity to learn about art.
On the 2.6-meter-high free corridor wall, large prints of works by various artists, regardless of fame or obscurity, region or age, will be exhibited, presenting a diverse range of paintings and photographs that speak to our times. The exhibits will be replaced approximately every six months, with the aim of creating an ongoing art project.
