Terry Winters Painting, Drawings, Prints 1994-2004 surveys a decade of Winters' work, revealing the relationships among his paintings, drawings, prints, and artist's books. Not interested in representing or inventing forms, Winters instead harnesses forces from both the natural and the synthetic worlds, bridging the gaps between the actual and the virtual, the theoretical and the physical. Internationally known for his paintings and drawings, Winters is also a distinguished contemporary printmaker. Since the early 1980s, he has used printmaking, drawing, and painting in equal measure, often in the same period or phase. Sometimes prints lead into drawings or vice versa, and either might lead to paintings, which in turn often lead back to works on paper. This interlocking relationship of media parallels the complexity of the bodies of works themselves.

This exhibition was organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. The exhibition and publication have been funded in part through generous donations from the Bertha and Isaac Liberman Foundation, the Fifth Floor Foundation, and the Harriet Ames Charitable Trust. The San Diego presentation is made possible by the generous contributions of MCASD's International Collectors. Additional support has been provided by Nora and Fritz Sargent.
