press release

Thank You for the Music is an exhibition about music, feelings, fans and idols. It delves into the encounters between popular music and contemporary art: the way that listening to music and watching music videos together with concert experiences become part of art.

The exhibited works celebrate stars, different styles, the history of pop music and fandom. They express how we feel when we are swept away by the power of music. Concerts and club gigs are both individual and communal experiences, and even after many years, music is able to take us back to past moments and moods.

Many of the artists in the exhibition - regardless of their age - claim to belong to the “MTV generation”. In the last 30 years, music videos have moulded our visual environment and reformed our conceptions of the relationship between music and image. The influence of music videos is evident in several of the exhibited works.

Artists: Adel Abidin (Finland), Petri Ala-Maunus (Finland), Eduardo Balanza (Spain), David Blandy (United Kindom), Candice Breitz (South Africa), Susanne Bürner (Germany), Graham Dolphin (United Kindom), Rose Eken (Denmark), Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard (United Kindom), Fabien Giraud (France), Jenni Hiltunen (Finland), Jani Hänninen (Finland), Katarzyna Kozyra (Poland), Petra Lindholm (Finland), Liisa Lounila (Finland), Sophie MacCorquodale (United Kindom), Maria Stereo (Finland), Rauha Mäkilä (Finland), Kalle Juhani Nieminen (Finland), Anneli Nygren (Finland), Pink Twins (Finland), Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland), Bojan Sarcevic (Serbia) and Terhi Ylimäinen (Finland).

The exhibition has curated by Kiasma’s Chief Curator Kati Kivinen and Chief Curator/Collections Arja Miller. Thank You for the Music catalogue is available in Kiasma Store and on the internet www.kiasma.fi/shop.
