press release

GALLERIES SELECTED FOR THE ARMORY SHOW 2005 The Armory Show announces that its 2005 Selection Committee has accepted 162 international galleries into The Armory Show 2005. The Armory Show received a record 522 applications for the 2005 fair, up 23% over 2004. Many more applicants requested larger booths attesting to The Armory Show’s position as the leading marketplace for 21st Century art. Accepted galleries represent the very best primary dealers showing new art by living artists. In keeping with The Armory Show’s commitment to remain on the cutting edge of the contemporary art world, 27 galleries make their debut in The Armory Show 2005, including one from India. There are 19 fewer New York galleries in next year’s fair, resulting from the Selection Committee’s desire to broaden international participation: 49% of the accepted galleries hail from Europe; 4% from Asia, 2% from Latin America and 10% from the US and Canada outside of New York. New York galleries account for 35% of all exhibitors (versus 40% in 2004). (A complete list of accepted galleries by city is attached hereto.)

Upon the recommendation of the Selection Committee, the 2005 edition of the fair will be tighter, more exclusive and more focused with fewer exhibiting galleries (162 versus 189 in 2004) and larger booths. Commenting on the announcement, Katelijne De Backer, Director, said, “The Selection Committee was determined to make the fair still better by being even more selective, applying rigorous standards to every application. The result of their review is a fair of exceptional quality and diversity.” Although there will be fewer galleries overall, those accepted galleries will use more square footage in their exhibition than in any previous year. “As so many very qualified galleries applied this year; the Selection Committee faced an enormous task to narrow the field to only the very best. We commend Massimo De Carlo, Maureen Paley, Emmanuel Perrotin, Jeff Poe, Lisa Spellman and David Zwirner for a challenging job well done,” added De Backer.

De Backer said, “The growing importance of a few select international art fairs creates a certain expectation on the part of collectors and museums. They love the convenience of ‘one stop shopping’ and the variety and diversity such fairs provide, but they insist on quality where every exhibitor is as professional and dynamic as the one next to it. They don’t want to feel overwhelmed or exhausted. Many don’t have three or four days to see a fair. The Armory Show 2005 promises to deliver one exceptional booth after another and the Piers are perfect for seeing it all in a straight-forward and manageable way. The Armory Show has been and always will be about the art. Of course, we have all the parties and visits to museums and private collections, but our focus remains squarely on the fair.” The Armory Show 2005 – The International Fair of New Art will take place March 11-14, 2005, on Piers 90 and 92 in New York City. An Opening Night Preview Party benefiting the Exhibition Fund of The Museum of Modern Art takes place on Thursday, March 10, 2005. Jockum Nordström has been commissioned by The Armory Show to create art for all visual materials associated with The Armory Show 2005.
