THE BITTER YEARS PHOTOGRAPHY DOROTHEA LANGE AND WALKER EVANS

Jack Delano, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Ben Shahn John Vachon, Marion Post Wolcott

The Bitter Years will present nearly 100 photographs from the Farm Security Administration, a New Deal government-sponsored project which resulted in a collection of thousands of images that form a collective memory of life during the Great Depression. Considered some of the finest examples of 20th Century American photography, the empathetic documentary-style images draw awareness to the poverty and endurance of the American people in the 1930s. The exhibition will feature photographs from the Margulies Collection by Dorothea Lange and her iconic image of the Migrant Mother which became an enduring symbol of the Great Depression, and the full range of Walker Evans' work including his architectural studies, images of signs and sharecroppers, and Polaroid's from the 1970s. The title of the exhibition is a reference to the historic 1962 exhibition The Bitter Years by Edward Steichen at MoMA.
