The Expanding Eye - Art Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Poe’s birth, the University of Virginia Art Museum will display works by major artists inspired by the innovative literary creations of Poe, probably one of the most influential writers in history. His thrilling and challenging words inspired many visual artists, from the nineteenth century to the present. His is an ongoing legacy and to a degree related to the daring and explorative spirit of Jefferson’s Academical Village, a concurrent show. The Poe-inspired exhibition will include varied images by James Ensor, Felix Vallotton, Frederico Castellon, Odilon Redon, Alice Neel, Shusaku Arakawa, and Nathan Oliveira. Poe was a member of the first class of Jefferson’s University and although Poe’s fantastic tendencies seem opposed to Jeffersonian rationalism, both men shared an interest in architecture, languages, technology, exploration, and invention, as well as the desire to inhabit a private aesthetic domain. The Expanding Eye will emphasize the fact that Poe’s legacy is both artistic and literary and is indeed connected to the unbounded legacy of the Academical Village.
